The concept of drop shipping is not new. It is a great idea for businesses that want to sell items but do not want to stock the items in their own warehouses. The business simply acquires customers who pay the price advertised and then orders the items from the manufacturer and has the items sent directly to the customer rather than to his own business address.

The price difference between what the warehouse charges and what the customer pays is the profit for the drop ship merchant. Sometimes the merchant has one sample of each product he offers so he can show it to his prospective customers. At other times, he uses a catalogue photo and description or Internet advertisement as his showpiece.

Many drop shippers sell only one or two items at a time but are able to order as many as their customers want.

China has gotten into the drop shipping act now. Many products which are produced in China can also be sent from China to the retail customer that a drop ship agent has acquired. Most types of products that are made in China can be sent worldwide on a drop ship basis. There are companies in China which now have online catalogues and arrange to ship one or more items to customers. This represents a significant savings, especially to customers who plan to resell the items.
