Places in China: Anhui Province
Located only around two hundred fifty miles from Shanghai, Anhui Province has become one of the industrial leading regions in China. The capital city of Hefei is only two hundred seventy-five miles from the Pacific Ocean so reaching export shipping sources is rather simple for its manufacturers.
There is only one province between Anhui and the ocean. The airport and railways make getting into and out of Hefei rather easy to do. The population average in the province is more than three times the national average so availability of labourers is less of a problem than in many other provinces in the country.
The capital city has a population of just over one million people. It is a part of the Shanghai Special Economic Zone. Four of China's industrial centres are located in Anhui. They are Ma'anshan, Huainan, Bengbu and Hefei, the provincial capital. Steel production is the strength of Ma'anshan while Bengbu has strong food-related industries and Huainan has a lot of coal production. Hefei is a manufacturing centre to a great degree.
This province was officially named a province in the seventeenth century after the Manchu conquered the country. Although the people are around ninety-nine percent Han, each of the four areas of Anhui has its own culture. The entire region uses the Mandarin language.
The weather in the province is typical for temperate zones with rather warm summers and mild winters. Mountains cover over sixty percent of the province, especially in the southwest portions with lower elevations in the northeast. Two major rivers occasionally overflow their banks, which causes some degree of poverty in the province.
Tourism has been encouraged in the province, especially due to the Huangshan Mountains as well as the Buddhist sacred mountain, Jiuhau Mountain.
