Not only is Beijing the capital city of the Peoples Republic of China, it is a great city for doing business. This orderly city's symmetrical design was begun in 1403 when city designs followed the ideas of orderly arrangement of streets into rectangular and square patterns. The system began at the palace and has spread even to the suburbs of Beijing. Careful planning has helped to create a well-designed city. Even the new airport is one of the best-planned facilities in the world for large-scale movement of people and materials.

Businesses from food-related to electronics-related to clothing-related are finding success in Beijing. The growing prosperity of Beijing has changed the area from a consumer city to a major industrial centre. Governmental reforms have encouraged foreign investments. Poor neighbourhoods are quickly being replaced by green-belted newly-built residential quarters. Wide highways and expressways now link Beijing with neighbouring provinces and cities. The railways and new airport make transportation problems nearly obsolete.

Scientific research is now done in over five hundred institutions in Beijing. The local institutes of higher learning now number over three hundred in Beijing. This city is now China's economic, cultural, political and educational centre as well as being the capital of the country. It is the most important centre in China for international communications and trade.
