Places in China: Guangxi Zhungzu Autonomous Region

Industries and business endeavours in Guangxi Zhungzu Autonomous Region are mostly involved with farming bringing in about fifteen percent of local revenue along with the mining of manganese ore, coal, crude oil, tin and iron. Fishing is also important to the province as is tourism.

The great variety of peoples in this province helps to bring tourists who want to see the many ethnic groups, especially during each group's festivals when the people dress in their traditional costumes. Likewise, the topography of the region attracts tourists interested in the rugged mountain panoramas, the caves to be explored and the beauty of the rivers.

The ethnic makeup of the region is about sixty-two percent Han, thirty-two percent Zhuang and the remaining six percent being Yao, Miao, Dong and Gelao along with smaller minorities such as Tong, Mulam, Maonan, Yi, Shui, Jing and Hui.

The neighbouring province of Guangdong has taken a great amount of the industrial and sea-based trade away from Guangxi. Still, the cities of Guangxi Zhungzu Autonomous Region have much to offer both in the area of tourism and in industry.

Zhou Enlai was instrumental in transferring Guangxi from a province to the autonomous region that it became in 1958. The province actually became a part of China in 214 BC under the Qin Dynasty. The province seems to have closer ties to Vietnam than many other Chinese provinces, partly due to its southwest border which shares a 930 mile coast on the Gulf of Tonkin.

The land area of the autonomous region is 23.7 million square kilometres. A population of nearly forty-five million allows for a population density of 207 people per square kilometre.

The capital city of Nanning has been adapting to become an industrial-focused city. Its industry focuses on biological and pharmaceutical products, electro mechanics, and high-yielding agriculture. Fifty-four scientific research centres, ten colleges and fifty or so trade schools, all within Nanning, help to train specialty personnel for the region and the country.

The weather situation in Guangxi Zhungzu Autonomous Region encourages tourism as an industry. Its monsoon, subtropical zone has no real winter weather, only occasional frosts but without snow. Migratory birds tend to rest all winter in the region without leaving for warmer climates.

Transportation into and out of Guangxi is rather good. Airports serve some of the cities and efforts are being made to bring more tourists into the region.
