Places in China: Guizhou Province
This 176,000 square kilometre province with nearly thirty-five million people tends to be less inclined to business than most of the other provinces in China. The people do not seem too concerned with many issues of the more modern world. Their local world of high and majestic mountains seems to be satisfactory to them.
The people are an ethnic mix. Sixty-two percent of them are Han. Another twelve percent are Miao. The Buyi make up eight percent, and five percent are Dong people. The rest are Tujia, Yi, Gelao and Shui with smaller mixtures of other ethnicities.
The people tend to live much as their ancestors lived, especially outside the major cities. For a good look at ethnic groups living their normal lives, a trip to the city of Kaili would suffice. In the past, the local groups and especially the Miao resisted the incoming Han Chinese. Thus, there are fewer Hans here than in most other provinces.
Airlines manage to bring in people from other parts of China. The capital of the province at Guiyang has an airport.
Most of the livelihood of this province is from coal mining and forestry. Some progress is being made in the realm of tourism, especially since a couple of outstanding attractions are in the province. The large Zhijin Caves, which are the largest limestone complex in China, are less than three hours from the provincial capital. The largest waterfall in Asia is Huangguoshu Falls, located in Guizhou Province.
These attractions do bring visitors into the province. So also does the ethnic mix of people. Visitors are impressed with their ways of living.
The most modern areas of the province are in the cities, especially the capital at Guiyang. There are new buildings stand in contrast to the old buildings in the city. Holidays and festivals are the best times to see the city looking busy.
