Places in China: Heilongjiang Province

Some of the business and industrial enterprises of Heilongjiang Province are quite successful. The local people seem to realize what endeavours are best for their particular circumstances.

Being in a location with rather harsh weather conditions, the people have chosen to use the types of activities which bring the best profit, from farming, tourist activities and economic positives.

Being in the northernmost region of China, where winters are long and very cold, the local activities are in response to the environment in which they live. Agriculture produces a lot of soy beans, beetroot, timber and linen. The robust winds of the area help to produce energy from the sub-arctic blasts. Natural deposits of coal and oil help the local economy. Nearly one half of China's oil needs are produced in Heilongjiang.

A few wild animals have adapted and are doing well in the province. Among them are the lynx, the north China tiger and the red-crowned crane. These animals, just as the local people, seem to enjoy this wintry habitat.

The coldest months in the year are when the people put on their annual Ice and Snow Festival in the capital city of the Province, Harbin. Winter sports and ice sculptures appear all over the city of four million to welcome any visitors who will ignore the coldness in the air to enjoy the warmth of the people who live here.

The people of the province are about ninety-five percent Han Chinese with Manchu, Korean, Mongol and Hui making up the majority of the remaining ethnic groups. The population density in this province is at a low of 83 people per square kilometre. The 453,000 square kilometres of land area supports less than thirty-seven million people.

There is a lot of Russian influence, especially in architecture, since Russia borders on this province. Many Russian people migrated to the province when Communism became strong in Russia. However, many of them migrated back to Russia when Communism grew powerful in China. There are a number of Russian Orthodox churches in this province.

The capital of Harbin is the most modern of the cities in the province. Modern shopping is available there alongside some elements of past history.
