This province is a large producer of grain for the nation. It also has a very old and still prosperous porcelain production area around Jingdezhen where fine ceramics have been produced since around 220 BC. This city is the one which is considered to be the porcelain capital.

The people of the subtropical province are almost entirely Han Chinese. Less than one percent of the people are of other ethnic groups, largely She, Hui, Yao and Miao. The population of forty million people occupy 166,000 square kilometres of land area in Jiangxi. Monsoon climate and nice weather make life more pleasant in this province than in many others. Summers usually do not exceed 89 degrees Fahrenheit with winters seldom becoming cold enough to freeze.

Revolutionary landmarks and interesting mountain vistas add interest to Jiangxi Province, especially the city of Nanchang and the mountains around Jinggangshan, the cradle of the Chinese Revolution.

Many of the youth of the province seek their fortunes elsewhere, in provinces or special economic zones which have more industry and opportunity for personal advancement. Thus, the province is not considered one of the more prosperous in China.

The largest freshwater lake in China, Poyang Hu, is a popular retreat as are the beautiful Lushan Mountains. Artists and connoisseurs of waterfalls, misty mountain vistas and temples enjoy visiting them. Mountains surround and protect the agricultural plains in the province. The Gan River is one of the major water sources for Jiangxi.

Visitors often choose to visit the porcelain factories in Jingdezhen where the classic blue and white porcelain has been produced since 1280 AD as well as the rice-patterned designs from the Song Dynasty.
