Places in China: Liaoning Province

The three provinces in the extreme northeast section of China are important providers of necessities of the country. One of these, which has been called the 'golden triangle' of China, is Liaoning Province.

Being in the far north, the weather involves warm summers but very long and cold winters. Regardless of the cold weather, the province has a goodly number of hot springs, rich resources for the local people.

Natural resources in the province include large iron deposits as well as diamonds, boron and magnesite. Other important industries in Liaoning are chemical, petroleum and natural gas.

Besides the industries connected with the natural resources, tourism is strong, especially in Dalian where beaches on the Bohai Sea draw many tourists. There are also great scenic vistas in and around Dalian.

The capital city of the province is Shenyang. It was formerly a major city in Manchuria, which is also called Dongbei. The remains of an imperial palace as well as East Mausoleum are major tourist attractions in Shenyang.

Liaoning is presently the 21st largest province in China with forty-two million people living on around 150,000 square kilometres of land. The people are around eighty-four percent Han with the Manchus having about thirteen percent of the population. Mongol, Hui and Korean ethnic groups are also represented in the province.

South Korea borders Lianonig Province. The province does a lot of business with South Korea as well as Japan. The three provinces in China which were formerly part of Manchuria are Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang.

Being close to the sea has given Liaoning Province distinct advantages over the years, both strategically and commercially.
