Places in China: Yunnan Province

Diversity is one descriptive word for Yunnan Province. Being in the far southwest corner of China and having twenty-five of the fifty-six ethnic peoples of China, Yunnan is rather different. Around 18,000 of China's 30,000 plant species are found in the province. The Asian elephant and Yunnan golden monkey are provincial natives. The Xishuangbanna rain forest in the province is home to several species of endangered plants and animals.

The weather in Yunnan is generally quite pleasant. Enough rainfall for watering the few agricultural activities and comfortable temperatures make this a good place to live and to visit.

The province covers 394,000 square kilometres of land with 44,150,000 people living on that land. The population density is a pleasant 112 persons per square kilometre. Most of those people are Han Chinese, sixty-seven percent. Yi are the second most populous group with eleven percent of Yunnan's population. Some other groups represented in the province include Zhuang, Dai, Miao, Hui, Lisu, Lahu, Va, Naxi, Yao, Tibetan, Jingpo, Blang, Pumi, Nu, Achang, Deang (Penglong), Mongolian, Drung and Jino.

The land is fertile enough for farming, but it is hard to get to since there are so many mountainous regions and uneven landscape areas. The crops which are farmed are tobacco, rice, sugar cane, tea and grapes.

Sugar production, tobacco, machinery production, electrical equipment and chemical products are among Yunnan's exports. Transportation to and from the province is limited to roads and the rail system.

The capital city and largest city in the province is Kunming. It is 1800 metres above sea level. The population of Kunming is around four million. It is a pleasant city with very good temperatures. Thus, it is sometimes called the 'city of eternal spring'. Nightlife in Kunming often is centred around the hotels' bars and nightclubs.
